UK Bathroom Renovation Budget: What to Plan For in 2026
Posted by Ultra Bathroom on
Most bathroom budgets go wrong before a single tile is chosen: the total is set from a guess, and nothing is held back for surprises. Here is a more reliable way to plan a UK bathroom renovation in 2026.
What a Bathroom Refit Typically Costs
According to a 2026 cost breakdown from The Bathroom Showroom, a UK bathroom renovation typically costs between £4,000 and £15,000, with a full family bathroom refit most commonly landing around £6,000 to £10,000. The same source splits projects into rough tiers: budget at £3,500 to £6,000, standard at £6,000 to £10,000, and premium from £12,000 upwards. Treat these as a sanity check, not a quote. Room size, layout changes and the age of your plumbing can move a project between tiers.
Where the Money Actually Goes
Labour is usually the biggest line. The same guide puts it at 40 to 60 per cent of the total, with UK bathroom fitters working out at roughly £320 to £480 per day. That has a practical consequence: cheaper fittings rarely rescue a budget, but moving pipework, waste positions or radiators adds fitter days quickly. Keeping sanitaryware and heating in their existing positions is often the simplest saving.
The remainder is split between plumbed appliances, wall and floor preparation, decoration, and fixtures, fittings and heating. Because heating is a small slice compared with labour, it is worth choosing well. A radiator or towel rail is something you live with every day, and a slim, well-sized model costs little extra to install compared with a poor fit you later replace. If you are refreshing the room, browse our designer radiators and check the output figures against the size of the room before you order.
Build in a Contingency
The guide recommends a contingency of 10 to 20 per cent of the total budget, set aside from day one. Older UK homes in particular can hide rotten floorboards, out-of-date pipework or uneven walls that only appear once the old suite comes out. If the contingency is not used, it becomes a nicer finish or a better fitting at the end.
Do the Kitchen at the Same Time?
If a kitchen update is also on the list, plan both together. Trades, plumbing access and delivery windows overlap, and it is easier to decide on a sink size once you know the worktop layout. Our kitchen sink collection is a good place to compare bowl configurations and finishes before you commit to a cabinet.
A Simple Planning Order
Set the total from a realistic tier, subtract your contingency, and then allocate the rest with labour first. Decide layout changes early, because they drive cost more than product choice. Then select fittings, heating and sinks to suit. For more ideas, visit Ultra Bathroom.
